Private arrangements

Despite the increased involvement of the authorities in distributing living space, private arrangements did take place. They often took the form of renting a ‘corner’ of someone else’s room. As Leder explains: ‘This was perfectly legal so long as the room was larger than the minimum required size … and the renter was a registered resident of [the city]. “For rent” notices were posted … at information booths around the city. A set fee was charged for a notice, depending on its length and the amount of time it was to remain posted.’31 Leder herself lived for a while in a ‘corner’ of a room in a communal apartment, though her relationship with her ostensible landlady soured when the latter began to bring men home to their shared room to supplement her wages.32
